Chilliwack Airport Runway Culvert Extension and Rehabilitation Substantially Completed October 30, 2015

The City of Chilliwack is pleased to announce the substantial completion of an airport runway culvert extension and rehabilitation project thanks to a grant of $315,584 from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

In August 2015, the City received the grant through the Province’s new B.C. Air Access Program to support community and regional airports in B.C. Under this project, the culvert south of the runway was extended to include a ditch near the runway, meeting requirements for an obstacle clear strip width. As part of the same project, an existing corroded metal culvert was rehabilitated. The project started on August 17, 2015 and is now substantially completed. The total project cost is estimated at $420,779, with the City contributing the remaining balance.

While the airport Head Lease transfers ongoing airport operations to Magnum Management, the City remains responsible for large capital improvements, such as culvert extensions and upgrades.

“The new B.C. Air Access Program provides funding to support infrastructure improvements at regional airports,” Chilliwack MLA John Martin said. “I’m happy to see these improvements made at the Chilliwack Airport as it continues to support the growth of our local and provincial economies.”

“Thanks to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s BC Air Access Program, we were able to extend a culvert and upgrade aging infrastructure at the Chilliwack Airport to ensure its continued use and enjoyment,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz.
