Community Issues Survey Reveals Gaming Attitudes

The City of Chilliwack has released the results of a 2008 survey that was commissioned on the subject of Provincial Gaming.  Sensus Research Inc. contacted 300 members of the Chilliwack community in order to gauge their opinion on the prospect of establishing a Community Gaming Centre or destination casino within the jurisdiction of the City of Chilliwack.  The key findings of the report indicate that members of the community are "divided in their support of Bingo facility conversion into a Community Gaming Centre and the building of a destination casino."  The report also indicates that there is a relatively low level of understanding of the concept of Community Gaming Centres, suggesting that increased public awareness will be necessary in order to ensure that members of the community have the ability to properly assess any such proposal before providing input to City Council.  The survey was conducted in anticipation of an application coming before City Council for a licensed gaming facility; however, Council, at this time, has not received any such application.

Mayor Clint Hames stated, "this study will be a useful tool for proponents of gaming facilities and I anticipate that it will provide a good source of stimulus for community discussion on any such proposals that should come forward in the future."
