  Salish Park

In the spring and summer of 2005, the Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture Department will be commencing with the construction of a new design for Salish Park. The objectives of this design are to help users to feel safer, reduce nuisance behaviour, provide more usable green space, and to improve the water quality.

Several modifications will be made to achieve these objectives.

They are as follows:

  • The pond will be drained and cleaned to help improve the water quality.
  • The large fish have been moved to the lower pond during construction.  They will be returned when the water is raised.
  • The existing overgrown vegetation will be removed or thinned to increase visibility and usability of the site.
  • A professional lighting plan has been completed for the site and will be installed in future phases of construction.
  • A small portion of the southeast corner of the pond will be filled to increase the usable space in the park.
  • A new wall will be constructed to replace the sloping exposed aggregate edge.
  • Lookouts will be constructed to provide meeting and viewing opportunities in the park.
  • A new rectangular pool will be constructed under the angular bridge to improve the waterfall at this location.
  • The stream area will be filled to provide access from the existing island to the Library lawn and this will then create a natural amphitheatre facing the Library.  The soil conditions at this lawn will also be improved.
  • The lower pond will be slightly reduced in size, with an improved waterfall and circulation system.
  • The entrance off of First Avenue will be modified to clearly define the lanes.  Park signage will also be installed at this entrance.
